There have been many articles written and research done (and our experience bears this out too) that says that entrepreneurs underestimate the problems they end up facing in building a business.
This is very true. And I think it's a good thing. You see, if we knew all of the difficulties of establishing a new business before we started, we might never try to launch one at all. The same thing might be said about starting a family.
However, experience has shown us that there that there are a number of things that can help when things get a little difficult. Here's how a few successful entrepreneurs overcame the problems they initially failed to recognize:
Having a clear strategy…
Successful entrepreneurs focus on delivering their chosen goods and services and only that. They are not distracted by enquiries for cheaper goods or services. Don’t be hauled off-track by the attraction of ‘cheap’ money.
Being and remaining flexible…
There is only one situation in which successful entrepreneurs will abandon a strategy: when customers won't buy it. You've got to resist the temptation to be everything for everyone…but when the thing you are doing isn't desired by anyone, change plans.
Maintaining a realistic view…
In making plans, successful businesspeople are honest with themselves and conservative in their expectations. They won't believe hype. Their understanding is much deeper and based on insight and data.
Behaving ethically…
Bad behaviour always has a way of catching up with a business.
Having a robust network…
Successful entrepreneurs have strong and extensive networks that they can turn to them in times of need.
Maintaining a global perspective…
Going international has been a recipe for disaster for smaller companies in the past. The internet puts everything in reach in a cost effective way.
Being able to deal with technology…
You may not like technological change…but if your customers want it, you have to live with it.
Having a passion for the job…
Not much can surpass the single-minded drive of an entrepreneur in solving a problem. If it’s your passion then you’ll find a way
