Robert Green made a huge mistake on Saturday night when England played the USA in their first game in the World Cup. He has held his hands up and taken responsibility for the mistake as it cost England the win. His fellow team members have also come out in support of him and rightly so too. However, in sport as in business, it is not what is said that matters, as we expect to hear words of support, it is what is done following the mistake that matters.

Great teams know that mistakes are made and it is how we react through our actions that defines how the team learns, grows and continues to compete.

Let’s be clear. It was the first game in the World Cup and a draw, although not what England wanted, is not a disaster. It’s a competition and there are two games left in their group. It’s now up to them how they respond in their next game that will define how well they are able to compete.

It is the same in business when a mistake is a made, whether it is a failed delivery, faulty product, poorly delivered service etc. How we respond to those mistakes is what defines us, our brand, our relationship with our customers and our ability to compete and attract new customers.

How the England team responds this coming Friday against Algeria will be an important moment in how their brand is seen by their fans (consumers).

What do you think?
