So Amazon is reporting pre-order sales of Windows 7 have obliterated the pre-order figures for Windows lame duck, Vista in a matter of hours. Fair doos, that’s quite a feat. I can’t help but wonder whether the majority of pre-orders come from people already running the Release Candidate version, or perhaps they’re disillusioned Vista users?
Then again, the temporary price-cut will have helped matters.
As a current Release Candidate user myself, I can certainly see why there’d be a rush on; after weeks of use there’s been little sign of any problems with the OS. It’s far more stable than the version of Vista I use here at Sift Towers, which stubbornly freezes for a couple of minutes on a daily basis. Away from work in the comfort of my own home, I’m already looking to update my aging PC and laptop to Windows 7-enabled kit sometime in the next twelve months – coupled with my use of Live Mesh, I’m actually getting rather excited of having a faster network within my own four walls.
How about you? Have you pre-ordered Windows 7 yet? Do you intend to upgrade your systems to the new OS in the next year?
This week is the annual Microsoft Worldwide Partners Conference, which this year is being held in New Orleans. We’ve already been subjected to some embarrassing hi5-ing on stage, together with Steve ‘developers, developers, developers’ Ballmer. Office 2010 and its lynchpin status within Microsoft’s Software plus Services strategy provided the highlight of an otherwise underwhelming series of keynotes. Heck, Microsoft is still determined to push Excel as a Business Intelligence tool...
Even though it’s being held in a city still recovering from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, in the worst recession in decades (sorry, I mean ‘economic reset’), Microsoft can still put on a show, helped all the more by the evangelising audience and participants. Despite this, it was actually difficult to get excited by some of the announcements and demonstrations; even the aforementioned audience failed to whoop or applaud at times...cue some awkward pauses.
Still, expect some excitement later this afternoon now the Win7 pre-order figures are proving fruitful.
