We've just completed a research project with Manchester Business School, which involved a group of five Masters' students engaging with us over a six week period.
We took it seriously (it's the second year that we have been involved with student projects) and briefed them on a tight but challenging agenda and helped set up a series of interviews with significant players in the relevant area.
The general topic was around corporate finance research. In particular it was a look at the much spoken about "Funding Gap" in the North West and a consideration of our theory of "The Quality of Money", which analyses the mutual co-operation and value-creation possibilities of investment rounds.
From here the students were asked to consider what they could contribute to a superior Investment Ready tool which might allow funders and funding seekers to engage more constructively.
The project was a resounding success. Not only have they assisted in the thinking of my organisation but they have produced a research report which I will enjoy sharing widely and which will act as the best kind of PR - good and useful research distributed as advice.
I urge you to consider what research projects might be available for yourself through your local university or college.
Take it seriously, engage properly with the young people, make it interesting and you will discover that there is considerable value to be had by both parties.
