The state of TV being what it is at the moment (poor) I’ve started watching the entire back catalogue of Hustle on DVD. I love that programme – it’s well written and well acted. It’s such a shame that there will be no more made.
Ignoring the fact that the ‘crew’ are all criminals, Hustle shows a team that works well together: They plan (and contingency plan), they each bring something unique to the team, they trust each other to deliver and they always, ALWAYS celebrate success! Every episode seems to end with free-flowing champagne.
Now, you’ll be pleased to know that I’m not a criminal, but like the crew on Hustle, I essentially work on ‘projects’. Many business owners and independent contractors do. So how come I never celebrate the success of each project with champagne, or indeed in any way at all? No, the end of each project goes unmarked as work begins immediately on the next one. I never take time to celebrate my successes. I bet most small businesses don’t.... But we should.
Reflecting back on success helps us to learn. It allows to understand how we have improved, and what we can offer our future clients. It will remind us to ask our satisfied customer for a referral or recommendation. It reminds us why we went into business in the first place, and that can be very motivating.
Its easy to spend time thinking about what’s next, and the opportunities we’ve missed, and even easier to ignore our successes. So to get power from your hour this week, get off your hamster wheel, stop looking at the next challenge/problem, and reflect of what you’ve achieved. Pour yourself a glass of champagne, and savour the moment....
...NOW you can move on to the next job ;-)
