The choices are bewildering and because printers are only an occasional purchase, it can be hard to get beyond superficial brand awareness to find the best models that fit your output needs and budget.

Working out the total cost of ownership - always a good measure of a technology system - can be particularly tricky with printers as suppliers will pretty give away the devices to get you hooked on their expensive consumables. As one member of UK Business Forums put it, the cost of consumables are often in inverse proportion to the printer's cost.
