HP issues LaserJet security patch

Printer and computer manufacturer HP has released a security notice advising of patches to protect the internal controls in 14 of its LaserJet printer models. John Stokdyk reports

The HP support notice warned that it had identified potential security vulnerabilities that could be exploited remotely to give hackers unauthorised access to the following printers and multifunction devices:

  • HP LaserJet 2410, 2420, 2430, 4250, 4350, 9040, 9050 printers

  • HP Color LaserJet 4730mfp and 9500mfp models

  • HP 9200C Digital Sender.

Most of the LaserJets are older, discontinued models, except for the departmental 9040 and 9050devices, which are still on sale for £1,749 and £2,379 respectively. The Digital Sender is a discontinued scanning device used to archive and share electronic documents.

Technical descriptions explain that a "directory traversal vulnerability" makes it possible for hackers to gain access to the HP JetDirect web administration interface.
