Microsoft launches foundation server platform

Microsoft has confirmed the release of a new server platform, Windows Server 2008 Foundation, aimed at small businesses with 15 or less employees.

The announcement came from Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, who spoke about the latest server platform: "We are launching a new server-based solution with the right technologies at the right price to give small businesses access to the power of server-based business software."

Ballmer also confirmed a six-month partnership that will see an unspecified portion of revenues from Windows Server 2008 Foundation go towards TechSoup.org and Telecentre.org. The two companies help provide technology to non-profit organisations.

Currently available across 40 countries in six languages, including English, Chinese, and Turkish, Microsoft has confirmed that additional localisation of Windows Server 2008 Foundation will become available throughout the course of 2009.
