Entrepreneurs predict negative results from London 2012

With 200 days to go until London 2012 begins, 25% of entrepreneurs believe that the Olympic Games will have a negative impact on their small business, according to a study by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

Research by the employers' organisation showed that despite promises that the legacy of the London 2012 Games will continue for years, a quarter of small company owners expect it to lead to a negative impact on their operations.

Only 7% of small company owners expect it to help their company, the report found, and 62% said the Games will have no positive, long term effects.

The findings come as senior members of the government visit the Olympics site in east London to mark 200 days until the start of the event. Trumpeting the benefits of the Games, prime minister David Cameron said London 2012 is "on track" to leave a lasting legacy for the UK.

But the FSB called on the government and Olympics authorities to make small firms aware of how they can actually benefit.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, said: "It is worrying that 200 days before the Olympic and Paralympic Games are set to begin, small businesses think it will not benefit their business. This is even more worrying considering the London 2012 Games was sold on the basis of its legacy.”

"We all know times are tough, but 2012 is a year of big events that small firms should be able to benefit from. The government and Olympic Authorities must help show small businesses how they can reap the rewards from one of the biggest sporting and tourism events the country has seen for years."
