The government will spend more than £78m on programmes and initiatives to support business owners in 2011/12, it has been revealed.

The figure of £78.9m was confirmed by business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk in an answer to a written question by Conservative MP Richard Fuller.

Among the costs are £66m on SME financing which includes the Enterprise Capital Funds and the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme.

Another £10.1m will be spent on business improvement initiatives such as the new Business Link helpline, the Business Coaching for Growth initiative and the MentorSME activities.

A total of £2.3m will be allocated to "projects to help promote a more entrepreneurial culture" including grants to the National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs, backing for the Premier League Charitable Fund's Enterprise Academy model and workshops to help small businesses make better use of the internet.

The remaining £500,000 is the cost of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.
