Know your point of impact: Michael Dell's tips for business success
Dell founder Michael Dell has shared his business insights at an event for female entrepreneurs in India attended by BusinessZone.co.uk.
The technology boss, who started the company aged 19, was speaking during a video interview with ForbesWoman president and publisher Moira Forbes screened at the Dell Women's Entrepreneur Network conference in New Delhi on Monday.
Growth
Dell encouraged small business owners to "think about you company point of impact" and "ask yourself 'what do I need to do to be successful?". That point of impact, he said, will be very different depending on your size of business. "When I had a small amount of employees I was doing everything", he said. ''But now I have thousands, I am completely focused on strategy."
Risk
"As your business grows, there is a tendancy to take fewer risks but you need to accept them," Dell said. The entrepreneur claimed that despite its size and success, he is still ready to experiment. "We define a healthy appetite for risk in our plans for future growth.
Leadership
Dell runs an employee initiative known as 'Tell Dell' which allows staff to comment anonymous on their workplace experiences. "This provides lots of insight into the effectiveness of our leaders," Dell commented. The company, Dell advised, has a strong culture and "when anyone joins Dell we tell them that. If you're not into it, the company may not be the place for you".
