The recession has led to the creation of 300,000 new home-based businesses, research has revealed.
According to the comprehensive report by Enterprise Nation, issues such as increased redundancy levels has created an 32% rise in the number of people starting a business from the same place as where they live. There are now 2.8m businesses operating full time from home, contributing £284bn a year to the UK economy, the study said.
The economic downturn has also driven up the number of part-time home-based companies. Those people 'working 5 to 9' - holding down a day job and building a business at nights and weekends – increased from 33% in 2008 to 42% in 2009. Protection against redundancy and a desire to be creative away from work were among the main reasons for the rise.
