Vince Cable appointed business secretary

Vince Cable has been named the business secretary in Britain's new coalition government.

The Liberal Democrats' former shadow chancellor will head up the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills which was previously run by Lord Mandelson.

The 62-year old politician, who is one of five secretaries of state in the new government, will be a popular choice among the business community having won praise from many for his views on the British economy during the recession.

David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "Vince Cable understands business and is popular with many small and medium-sized companies. 

"His work as the Liberal Democrats' shadow chancellor means that he knows where the UK fits within a global context and the important role the private sector will play in driving future job creation and economic growth.
