We've taken a pounding but we're fighting back, say micro businesses

David and Goliath

A new group aimed at improving the way the government and banks support micro businesses has been launched.

Representing 4.5m business owners, the self-employed and sole traders, who each employ up to nine workers and run 95% of all UK companies, the creators of Enterprise Rockers say micro firms have "taken a right pounding from government, big business and the banks over the last 10 years" and the new group is "the fight back".

Launched on Scarborough Beach, the organisation follows a social media campaign using the #MicroBizMatters hashtag which has encouraged people to sign a petition calling for "clearer communication by government on the contribution and benefit of its policies, programmes and support to micro enterprises".

Enterprise Rockers co-founder Tina Boden, who runs a fine food business, said: "Whether you employ zero or nine people or any number in between it does not really matter. We just want to bring as many UK residents that run their own micro enterprise together to ensure we have the power of plenty.

"With the power of plenty behind us government and big business will have to take notice of us little guys. We'll also have a lot of fun promoting each other including to existing and new customers "

Co-founder Tony Robinson OBE added: "Tina and I see [the launch] as the beginning of a movement that is not just social media but is on the streets of Britain too."

Enterprise Rockers claims that  for every £50m of government support provided to micro businesses, 6000 big companies get £1bn.
