Politicians fail to commit to ditching IR35

Despite previously indicating a major review is on the cards, the Conservatives have shied away from committing to scrap IR35, the controversial legislation which determines how much tax contractors pay.

The perennial flashpoint that is IR35 reignited this week after a Tory official rubbished suggestions that the party would ditch the rules if it gains power at next week's general election. Critics of IR35 have long argued that the system is too complex and results in many people who are self-employed having to class themselves as employed and face a higher tax bill.
