General election to take place on 6 May
After months of speculation, Gordon Brown has confirmed that the 2010 general election will take place on 6 May.
As is tradition, the prime minister travelled to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday morning to meet the Queen and request the dissolution of Parliament.
After the request was granted, Brown travelled back to Downing Street where, flanked by members of his cabinet, he confirmed what he described as "the worst kept secret of recent years".
