Government backed Google campaign 'undermines UK business'

A government-endorsed Google initative providing free websites to small businesses has been branded a project which poses a risk to the future of UK-based web companies.

Launched today with much publicity, the 'Get British Business Online' (GBB0) campaign is offering websites to 100,000 small companies which do not yet have a web presence. Set up by Google and BT, the scheme is officially supported by government-funded organisation Enterprise UK. It has also been publicly endorsed by Lord Mandelson who issued a statement saying he wished the campaign "every success".

But the entrepreneurs behind Mr Site, a UK-based company offering DIY website services, slammed the programme as potentially "undermining the long-term commercial viability of the UK web sector to the ultimate detriment of UK consumers".
