Amid speculation that the general election is to take place on 6 May, the Liberal Democrats shadow chancellor said his party is the only one "committed to genuine and far reaching economic reform".
Speaking at the Demos institute, a London-based think tank, Cable said a sustained recovery will rely on the private sector with small and medium sized business taking the lead in generating jobs. But for this to happen, it is up to government to "help create a business environment conducive to start-ups and small business".
Key to an entrepreneur-friendly UK, Cable stressed, is moderate taxes, the culling of red tape, the security of intellectual property rights and access to credit on competitive terms.
