In the first change to a system that was created in 1948, doctors are from today able to inform employers of the duties a sick employee is able to perform.
The development means that the 62-year-old 'sick note', which meant GPs decided whether a patient on sick leave for more than seven days should or should not return to work is replaced by a 'fit note' through which doctors outline how an employee may be able to perform if temporary changes are made to their working conditions.
