Karren Brady disagrees with Lord Sugar on working women who want children

Karren Brady

The Apprentice star Karren Brady has criticised Lord Sugar's claim that employers should be allowed to ask female job interviewees whether they plan on having a baby.

In an interview which will appear in tomorrow's Evening Standard ES Magazine, Brady, who appears with the peer on the hit BBC TV show, responded to his comments earlier this year that employment rules which ban bosses from questioning potential workers on family issues are "counterproductive".

"If you're running a small business and people aren't there, that [women taking time off to have children] is a difficult thing to combine with your own ambitions," she said. "But if you say you'd like children in the next five years and that rules you out of a job then I don't think that's particularly fair.

"I don't even think about those things. I managed to have a family and run a business, so I don't see any problems."

Brady added that one of her aims is to inspire the next generation of women to go into business. "I think it's my responsibility to carve out an easier path for my daughter and her daughter," she commented.

The new series of The Apprentice begins on 10 May at 9pm on BBC One.
