Minimum wage to rise to £5.80 an hour

  • Government has approved recommendations of the Low Pay Commission
  • Minimum wage for adults over 22 will rise from £5.73 to £5.80 an hour
  • Increases also for 18-21 year olds and 16 and 17 year olds
  • Ministers claims needs of both employees and businesses taken into account
  • Low Pay Commission factored in the economic climate when making decision

The latest annual increase to the National Minimum Wage has been confirmed by the government. Accepting the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission, ministers said the limit for those aged over 22 will rise from £5.73 to £5.80 an hour from October 2009.
