NI holiday: 393,000 fewer firms than predicted get involved, Cameron admits
David Cameron has admitted that only 7,000 small businesses have taken part in the initiative allowing small firms to avoid paying National Insurance despite the government predicting that 400,000 would do so.
The figure was revealed during Wednesday's prime minister's questions in the House of Commons.
When Labour leader Ed Miliband questioned Cameron on how many have taken part, he simply replied: "7,000".
Introduced last year, the scheme allows entrepreneurs running a new business outside of London, the South East and Eastern England to not pay National Insurance contributions (NICs) for their first 10 employees.
Miliband said the low take-up showed that the government's "policies are not working".
