Major tech startup incubator opens in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle

A new incubator for small technology companies will open in the Scottish capital this week.

TechCube, described by its founders as "the first incubator in Scotland developed entirely by private capital and the local startup community", will officially open on 13 December in a seven-storey office block close to the University of Edinburgh.

Among those funding the project are accounting software company FreeAgent, Scottish Equity Partners and Scotland-based flight comparison service Skyscanner which donated £25,000 worth of office furniture. First minister Alex Salmond has also endorsed the initiative.

At launch, 17 companies have taken space in the building including The Journal, a local media platform that produces print and online content for students, and Fanduel, a fantasy sports game NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL in the US and Canada.

Dr Jamie Coleman, managing director of TechCube and director of Northface Ventures, said: "I hope that TechCube will fuel the incredible Scottish startup community by bringing together the hottest startups and private equity. By lowering the barriers to entry, we can create a true meritocracy where the brightest and best can succeed."
