Microsoft Cloud services return following overnight outage

Microsoft has confirmed that several of its most popular Cloud Computing services experienced a service outage lasting around two hours overnight.

The corporation said Hotmail, Office 365 (its alternative to Google’s online ‘Google Docs’ office applications suite, and SkyDrive were all affected by the outage, which took place between 4:00am and 6:30am British Summer Time.

In a blog post on the official Windows Live blog, Microsoft said the outage was apparently caused by issues with its DNS address system:

“We have completed propagating our DNS configuration changes around the world, and have restored service for most customers,” said Microsoft’s Chris Jones. “Depending on your location you may still experience issues over the next 30 minutes as the changes make their way through the network.  Thank you for your patience as we have worked to address these issues.”

It was the second outage to hit Office 365 – which launched earlier this in the summer - in a month.
