iPhone: 2009's Gadget of the Year

  • A well known favourite won our prize for Gadget of the Year
  • But UK Business Forums opt for Android rival, HTC's HD2 smartphone

Apple's iconic iPhone 3GS ran away with the Business Zone community vote for the most desirable bit of electronic kit in our 2009 Christmas Gadget Countdown.

With a flurry of votes coming in via Twitter, Apple's iPhone emerged as this year's Gadget of the Year. This is the third year in a row that the iPhone has got the nod from Business Zone members. But after such a remarkable run of success, the 2009 countdown results suggest Apple may be coming under pressure from rival manufacturers who are fast catching up.

The iPhone won acclaim across all the Sift Media communities that take part in the Christmas Gadget Countdown, but on our sister site AccountingWEB.co.uk, the iPhone only won after an 11th hour poll to resolve a tie in the number of nominatiosn. The Christmas Gadget Countdown was devised by executive peripherals editor Nigel Harris, who posted a list of potential candidates in AccountingWEB's Gadget Zone blog. His vote went not to the iPhone, but Mobile phone apps in general. "The platform is no longer the star - it's what you can do with it," he noted.

"Apple's iTunes store has led the way through the ease with with you can download news feeds, Facebook tools, games and navigation aids to your iPhone. Now that Microsoft, Google's Android and Nokia's Symbian are joining the race, the age of mobile computing has truly arrived."
